Inauguration of the Ampsin-Neuville Lock

3 July 2024

The modernisation and expansion of the Ampsin-Neuville lock have been successfully completed. This large-scale project, which began in the summer of 2018, includes the installation of two new locks, one of which is an impressive lock measuring 225x25 meters with a capacity of 9.000 tons 9,000 tons, and five weirs. These improvements eliminate the last bottleneck for shipping traffic on the Meuse River, significantly facilitating passage.

Large-scale modernisation and ecological improvements

During the project, various works were carried out. The old locks, with limited dimensions, were replaced by two new locks measuring 225x12.5 meters and 225x25 meters. These modernisations ensure that larger vessels can now pass without delay, significantly reducing waiting times for skippers and allowing the passage of larger and heavier vessels.
In addition to the construction of the new locks, numerous additional improvements were made. The national road N90, which runs parallel to the lock, was extended and made safer, and a new 620-meter-long bicycle and pedestrian bridge connects the municipalities of Huy and Amay over the lock.

Notably, the longest fish passage in Wallonia was constructed, a 700-meter-long artificial river containing various zones to support different fish species and other aquatic fauna. This promotes biodiversity in the region.
